Fat Kids

Today's Chicago Tribune has startling news: 23% of our children 3 to 5 are overweight! The situation is so out of hand that car safety seats can't handle the tubby little buggers.

If one out of every four kids is fat, then some parents need to rethink food choices. Sure, some of this is baby fat and it may well melt away, but how many of these kids will grow up to be fat pre-teens, then fat teens, and finally fat adults?

If one out of four kids between 3 and 5 were smoking, would we make child ashtrays? No way! But for the fat kids we make larger safety seats, larger clothing, and larger meals. By doing so, we tell these kids (and their parents) that being fat is okay. (Heaven forbid we damage any self-esteem!) Newsflash: Being fat is not okay. It's unhealthy.

It's time to stop feeding these kids a false sense of confidence (and extra chips and soda) and push them toward a healthy diet and exercise program.
